Ojay, so I'm stuck out west and when I go East usually not looking for a beer. But the people at MSNBC just ran a story that says this company moved into the #1 spot of American OWNED and brewed beer. just barely beet out Boston Beer aka Sam Adams.

Anyone familiar with them? Next time in Columbus or NYC which brew should I try?

IMO, yuengling is not very good, maybe a step above budweiser. sam adams is far and above a better beer than yuengling. again, just my opinion. i suggest a taste test when you get here. aren't they both usually lagers on tap?

    Yuengling, a.k.a. 'vitamin Y'

Since Rolling Rock got bought out of SW PA, Yuengling is my fave 'lower level' PA beer. There are many better beeers made in PA, but Yuengling has decent quality at a very reasonable price point.

Yuengling is OK beer overall. Despite what they are labeled, they are ALL lager beers. IMO the Lord Chesterfield 'Ale' (my quotes) has the most flavor. The Lager is the most popular (caused Bud to start using the term again in their adverts). The Porter is not bad, but again, it is not an ale. I like a beer to be true to style.

Worth a try to be sure.

I feel SA to be a bit over-rated. Plenty of better micros on the market.

Non-intuitive name. I thought this was going to be about Chinese beer. But German origins. Never heard off but there's a few brews in the line-up that I'd definitely try, something that cannot be said about the usual US beer suspects (Sam Adams excepting).

Edit: nevermind, seeing the above comments I'll steer away from it.

methinks, based upon this and chatter in several other on-line places i frequent, that this pennsylvanian/germanic/chinese beer must have some serious marketing juice being applied right now and may soon be the 2012 version of, say, what stella artois was a few years back. which is to say: the faddish yang to the PBR yin of hipsterish pop culture.

in case that wasn't convoluted enough for you... seems like yeungling is being foisted upon the cooler-than-me crowd right now real heavy-like. i knew of (and forgot about) it, but all of a sudden it's in bars and stores here locally. (and by locally i mean quite a bit south and west of old latrobe.)

me- i try to stay as local/regional as possible. when in rome, all that jazz... that said, sometimes it's hard to find a quality/value match for my particular standby (which shall remain unnamed but which definitely does not originate locally). oh, and guiness. but that's a beer that is altogether its own thing.

Back in the day Yuengling Golden Anniversary was a low dough go to.
I wouldn't be surprised if Yuengling brews for other labels.

Okay, sounds like a try-it-once but I'm likely not missing anything.

i don't know. they're still in business so they must be doing something right without a lot of marketing (at least down here in the southeast). i just prefer sam adams given the choice. i bet nyc and columbus both have some killer beer bars that offer much better beer than yuengling or sam adams.

Back in the day this was my treat via VietNam
Woke up in the medic tent one night after a day of heavy carousing at some shack, they found me under a table and called the M.P.s. thinking I was dead.

@ The Skinny - The deal with Yuengling is that any beer of theirs that you drink below the Mason Dixon line is brewed in Florida, not Pottsville, PA.

I took my wife's family to the Yuengling Brewery tour just before our wedding back in 1996. We bumped into Dick Yuengling who knew of my father from his days at Lehigh University, so we got to talk with him and he took us to the "tasting" room. Wow - Hands down the best way to try his beer! I don't know what type of succession plan he has in place, because he had girls and the company was passed to the next male in line.

I thought Yuengling already went through the cool, hipster phase in NY. If someone were to give me a bunch, I would be more than happy to pass it all on to yomike (or anyone else that can appreciate it. While in NYC you might want to check out Ginger Man ( http://gingerman-ny.com/ ) or Heartland Brewery ( http://www.heartlandbrewery.com/ ) or Chelsea Brewery, cool place, lots of things to do at the Chelsea Pier ( http://www.chelseabrewingco.com/ ), Or Amsterdam Ale House ( http://www.chelseabrewingco.com/ ), or I guess you could go for a Sam Adams. Cheers.

I've drank that occasionally for as long as I can remember. Aren't they the oldest beer in America or something??
