Hit 68 MPH today (sorta)

Well let that be a lesson to remember to shut the Garmin OFF before putting the tandem in the back of your buddies pickup truck and driving home.

Went to download the ride a few minutes ago and thought the ride time, distance, and average speed (30+) didn't fit the casual paced tandem ride we did with my buddy and his wife on theirs.

Check out the details and oh my, we hit 68+ on the return. Oh that's on the freeway.

    DOH!

Note: actual tandem ride was 18.6 miles and about 1:10.

68 would have been impressive. I've not gone faster than 62 on a pedal bike. (178 on my R1)

I got ya beat Jack! My cateye wireless goes up to 80-something when I hit the corner of 45th and Stone Way here in Seattle! Not sure if it is the traffic light sensor, a cell phone tower, or engine of car next to me.

KidWok, my Cateye will log some pretty impressive fastest speeds as well.

bodynazi, 178? racing or just out for a fun ride on that R1?

I managed 200kph on my ST1300. My bike was on a plane once Over 500 mph.

The other day I averaged 35.3mph for 100 miles on my bicycle:) (I should also probably mention I was drafting my hatchback with the hatch up and my fiancee' behind the wheel) Still, covered 100 miles in 2 hours 42 minutes!

A few years ago, a buddy and I latched onto the back of a semi right as it was leaving a traffic light. Tucked into the draft and we were cruising along at 52 mph with no problem. It was awesome!!

The two highest speeds I have hit on a bike occurred in FL (56) and IL (52, as above). Weird, huh? ;-) The 56 in FL was near Ocala, on what I believe is the only hill in the state. Not very long, but super-steep.

    Just say "NO!!" to WCP!

CK I have the exact same highs. 56 is my fastest. It came after the French Broad Classic Road Race. It is a mountain top finish. Then you descend the 8 miles back to the start. Just rolling along utterly exhausted is when I hit 56. Then I hit 52 twice, also behind trucks. One was a flatbed short truck but it was carrying an outdoor building on it. It was on a four lane highway and the speedlimit was 45. You should have seen the looks I was getting flying past the cars. The other was behind a semi coming from a redlight. As a side note, both of those high speeds were up slight inclines :)

For me it was with a buddy trading drafts descending from Mt Whitney.....60 several times. That's when you start thinking "just how good of shape are my tires in...."

When I used to live in Albuquerque, I could hit 60 mph descending down Tramway rd towards I-25. The gradient is about 6%, but the road has no sharp turns and goes on for miles. You can hit some scary fast speeds if you have a tailwind.

Most of the hills here aren't steep enough to hit descend speeds. But last year I got myself behind a truck coming down Burnaby Mtn and managed to cruise down pretty good. Coming out of the draft and hitting the subsequent turbulence was...let's say...interesting.

Okay, fast speed actually on the bike was 53 at one of the Solvang Century rides. Massive downhill by Vandenberg AFB with straight, clearly visibile roll-out and climb up other side so a few of us went for it.

Similar speed on highway 52 in San Diego on a long 3% or so downgrade but on the tandem. We had about 6 tandems pacelining up the grade and when we rolled over it was payback time! Only issue was the cars that slowed down along side to gauge our speed. The buffeting was not fun.

Wife was about to punch me in the kidneys as we rolled-out at the bottom.

One can pedal into the 50s pretty easily w a 53x12, prolly 60s w an 11 and a solid draft.

178 was was just on a ride Spud.. not that big of a deal as it's rock solid and only takes a few seconds to get there.. I don't do that too often.

I once momentarily hit over 33,000 MPH. At least that what the Garmin Edge 305 said at the end of the ride. Obviously it was a fluke. It could have been a sat communication error or what have you. Everytime my group gets together and has a top speed discussion I whip out the ride data from that day and trump them all.

My fastest runs are all undocumented. On the Stowe, VT descent, our pace car, the local police, told us he had to hit 60 between corners to stay ahead of us. That same summer I went down New Hampshire's 101 going west into Peterboro. "Trucks use low gear", straight, 1000'. Might have been 10-12%.

On of my very early rides on my ti bike, I went down Bald Mountain Road southwest of Portland on a very windy October day. Truly scary fast. The bike felt great. 53-12 was useless. Over 60?

But what really feels fast is over 45 on a fix gear. Again, completely undocumented. (And on a fixie, even if I had the electronics, being able to actually look down without my eyes bouncing and being able to read the display would nave been impossible.)

51mph here. On a long twisty hill. To be truthful I may have been going faster, but I started thinking about thin skinny tires. Amazing how such thoughts cross the mind at these times. I think its the self preservation part of the brain that kicks in, saying if you fall...................it's gonna hurt,.................really hurt. Now reach down and gently apply those brakes......................BEFORE YOU GET US KILLED!

    pretty funny jack!!
58 is tops for me on this hill that rolls back into Santa Fe, NM from the north, Bishop's Lodge Road, been trying to crack 60, fun as heck to set off this speed limit sign, starts to flash, "SLOW DOWN" actual speed for cars in this section is 30! Oops!
OIR - I hear ya, when I'm doing it, I'm having a hoot, the thought of WHAT could happen, never enters my mind until later. I tell people, this is ONE reason you don't cheap out on tires

brasstown bald, double nickel a few times descending the side where the race (tour of georgia)used to come up. you can see thru a bunch of turns and really get a head of steam. fast as I would like to go

currently there is a mountain road that was recently paved that is over 20% grade for at least a mile, but an off camber switchback at the bottom that keeps speeds down. waiting for those disc brakes

Yeah, I do often miss Albuquerque for its great cycling terrain. Too bad the good jobs are so scarce there or I'd certainly consider moving back to the Southwest. Loved Arizona as well.

Albq. riding has been getting better and better, many more bike trails connecting all over the place, much less interaction with Traffic, the trails go under the highways and major streets, connections to the west side now, love to hit the train from SF down that way, hit some good rides, warmer temps, etc...
hit 60 once rolling down tramway once nighfend, and Kidwok, pretty wild to hear my spoke howling like crazy
One thing for sure, you will never get rich in NM, always has been that way as long as I can remember
