I've really enjoyred reading the diatribes that accompanied the posting of photos from GW and E3; it's a nice change from grading papers.

But it made me want to know what each of you thought was THE greatest cycling photo ever?

C'mon, make a pick and put it up.

Me, I can't post my favorite, as I'm too torn between the photo of Davis Phinney after he put his head through the renault, or Lemond winning worlds. The agony and the ecstasy, in two photos.

i can't find it anymore- they wiped it off the cyclingnews archives, but there's a shot of jan from... 03 i think. he's chasing back on, by himself, with a moto near him, crowds yelling behing him, on some tree lined pass, and he's wearing this expression like the instant the stick of dynamite blows down somewhere in his torso- his mouth open wide like he's trying to inhale the whole atmosphere at once, his eyes look like they've been pulled taut and, like, sewed open that way. just pure unfiltered agony.

shit, i wish i could find that picture. i had it on a hard drive- at my last job...

Cover of Velonews showing Duclos-Lassalle edging out Franco Ballerini for the win at Paris-Roubaix in 1993. D-L threw his bike and the shot showed him extended out.. you could see every muscle in his legs full on flexed.

I had the cover hung in my office for years until it finally yellowed and disintegrated. If that were available in a print I'd be all over it.

Like this but more from the side --> http://www.flickr.com/photos/brawngp-cycling-v2d/6790046825/

lochness, good call on LeMonds expression... that's another favorite.

It was similar to that... wow, now I don't fully remember from 19 years ago. D-L swung up track and shot down on Ballerini to edge him out. FB was devastated at being nipped and swore that he'd never come back to P-R. He did and got a win.

So many amazing photos. The Lemond/Hinault photo above. Lemond Worlds in the rain are among the my favorites. There is one of Boonen in the early years, maybe his first year, winning a bunch sprint in the rain with spray shooting everywhere. Cant find it right now.

I often like more candid shots or ones that indirectly deal with the actual race action. One photo that sticks with me through the years is this.

I really like this one of Voeckler on the Galibier last year. Great example of exhaustion and elation in the same moment.

Greg was photogenic ...or maybe I am just nostalgic

89 worlds. lemond stoked, Kelly wanting to kick the dog and Dimitry just glad to be there

89 Tour, who can forget the dust up with Fignon

Looking at the worlds photo, I am struck, yet again, at how massive Lemond's quads were. The man had some power, to be sure. And the shot of him in the lockers at P-R gives a whole new meaning to "hurt locker".

Here's the Boonen photo from 2002 that I couldn't find earlier. Wish it were larger.

yeah, that's the one. thanks! not sure why i remembered trees (but, frankly, i'm surprised i got so much of it right). as somebody who makes some money with a camera, that shot is just... well, it's just one i wouldn't mind having as my own. and, yes- admittedly it coincides, roughly, with the time i became interested in cycling (unless you count the freestyle craze of junior high in the 80's), so there's that. plus, it's a straight shot- cool as that boonen pic is, the processing is a little over the top for my taste- which, i think, is in the neighborhood of the point dan was trying to make in the first place.

Too many to just pick one but if I must then surly it has to from mans willingness to suffer the indignity of classics like Paris Roubaix.

BUT afterwards the camaraderie and pride is priceless.

@Jah: One of my favorite cycling pictures features Merckx, in lousy weather, kind of like the one you posted, albeit the one I'm thinking of has him on a training ride with his derny driver next or slightly behind him. Both of them look like they're not enjoying themselves very much but also like there's nothing they'd rather do. I'll try to find it, it was in a book on Eddy Merckx.

Most any Roger De Vlaeminck photo from P-R wearing the Brooklyn jersey and riding a Gios has it all, power, style and grace - coolest cycling photos ever.

I, too, love that shot of Hincapie leading Knaven et al. If only he had been in front at the finish, too!

GH coming in sixth or seventh every year, and still coming back, kind of defines grinta, for me.

But has anybody else noticed that these are all "indivdual" pictures? Aside from the Boonen sprint picture (which I've never seen before, thanks!), there's no larger scenery. Not being a photographer by trade, I wonder why that is.

There are a lot of good photos with "larger scenery". My personal opinion is that when asked for favorite cycling photos, the replies will focus (no photography pun intended) on the cyclists themselves... the emotions and suffering that stir up a fans passion.
