So what are you listening to lately?
Semi-seasonal music thread.

It is his word versus ours. We like our word. We like where we stand and we like our credibility."--Lance Armstrong.

I haven't listened to anything new for a long long time...out of touch.
This week for some reason, the Rollins Band was calling me. Songs like WreckAge and Do It! just felt right.
The wise man said follow me...and he walked behind. -
Well, I heard Springsteen and the expanded E Street Band live last night; phenominal. A good mix of new with a lot of old favorites....some from 1973....damn, we're old.
Speaking of old, Bruce even got his 90 YO Mom on stage last night.
Alternately, there is Lake Street Dive, a nice mix of styles with solid musicianship, writing, and a great lead singer

Lots of Jimmy Buffet lately, as I'm using "fins" to teach my daughter left and right.

Been listening to a TON of Stevie Wonder due to my son, who as a young musician is just enamored with Stevie.

A video of him in the studio discussing Songs in the Key of Life. Check him out on drums. Everyone should own this album, btw.
Also been listening to a lot of piano jazz. I won't go into Bill Evans again....lol.
Been digging into some Ahmad Jamal. He has some serious classically derived jazz chops ala Art Tatum

For you jazz fans, if you have not heard Swahililand, sit down. You will want a drink for this.

Not a whole lot of new stuff sparks my interest. I have found that I'm listening to more Prog Rock these days.
"Riding is about rhythm and flow. It's the wind in your face and the challange of hammering up a long hill. It's the reward at the top and the thrill of a high-speed descent. Biking lets you come alive both in body and spirit." -
These days I'm into overnight sensations Led Zeppelin, AC/DC (with Bon Scott), Stiff Little Fingers. A month ago it was Art Blakey, Max Roach and Clifford Brown.
-
Springsteen's new album continues to amaze me. Weeks into it and I am not bored with it yet. And as Yo Mike! indicated, the E St Band sounds as good as ever....if just a bit larger than normal.
Just say "NO!!" to WCP!
"Want to get faster? Work harder, eat better, cut the crap. Instead of talking the talk, work the work" -

Lake Street Dive will be on A Prairie Home Companion this weekend at Town Hall in NYC.

They were at SXSW and on Mountain Stage recently.
These are some nice, very talented people - met at the New England Conservatory - the base player has won a Lennon songwriting award, and the trumpet player has been dating a friend's daughter (who is an aspiring opera singer) for many years.
I'll be listening!

Saw Todd Rundgren Sunday night here at the Rialto. I hate to see artists cancel a show for any reason, but when the singer of the band is sick PLEASE do us all a favor and cancel the show instead of putting us all through that hell of having to listen to you try to hit those notes. I do appreciate the effort Todd but really.

While I'm afraid that almost no living beings even come close to sharing my musical proclivities, here's one I recently discovered. One of the sweetest recordings I've heard for quite some time. But it pains me to admit that a Beatles song, or a cover thereof, has caught my attention. I can't think of anything sillier and less worthy of consideration than Beatles' music, but here an exception ...

Saw Willie Nelson in concert a few days ago. Someone must have overcooked the turnip greens they were fixing as I distinctly smelled burnt vegetables while I was there.
And to the guy who was wearing a suit three rows down from me.... seriously?

RIP Levon Helm

Been listening to The Band a lot lately, in memorium. Always liked their work. At the moment I am listening to an oldie, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, Eno and Byrne. Damn it's good.
Lance who?? -
RIP Levon, it's a downer to lose a great one.

OK. Now that the dust has settled, let me offer a timelesss answer.
Whatever you are listen'n to, the best of it all stems from roots of the classic geniuses of yore. While I generally espouse the theory that all worthwhile music stems from either Beethoven or AP Carter, I'm prepared to make an exception. Everything else that you've been listeinting to harkens back to this ....
