The problem was with the bike. The operator was "fine" but the Lites were out.

@zoot - that was my first thought... I had a student a few years back show up to class with what turned out to be .17 that was rising. Couldn't imagine him staying on a bike long enough to wreck. He did master banging his head against the squad car window, though. The deputy, a friend of mine, did all he could to keep this young man from hurting himself... admirable display of professionalism I must say. I digress...

I know it runs contrary to many, but I gave up alcohol many years ago... don't miss it.

Hmmm...... seems there is blame on both sides here. He for riding in the dark without lights, she for hitting someone in the crosswalk, where a pedestrian and/or cyclist would have right of way, unless there was a pedestrian-specific crossing light that was red at the time. If he had been walking there, it sounds like he still would have ben hit, putting the culpability on the driver. I would give some credit to the guy for not driving a car home after getting bombed, but not let him off the hook entirely. I would have thought that the driver would have been cited regardless of his A.L. as she did violate his right-of-way. Had he been sober, he might have been able to take evasive action when he saw her turning into him, but it seems he was not the primary creator of this accident.

Does a cyclist in a crosswalk have the right of way though?

I'm pretty sure the law here is that the cyclist is considered a vehicle and needs to act as one. As a cyclist, you don't get to suddenly become a pedestrian and jump across a crosswalk or onto a sidewalk when it becomes convenient for you. Bikes move way to fast to expect drivers to see them approaching crosswalks from sidewalks, especially around downtown corners with buildings.
If you want to become a pedestiran and use the crosswalk, you need to dismount and walk your bike across. This is one of my biggest pet peeves watching other cyclists around town.

Hell, I'm just getting warmed up with 10 drinks - thus my motto "10 for the road."

personally, I'd never ride a bike on a sidewalk - unless it was beside a major interstate or something..

Rode home from The Union (at UW Madison) after many pitchers of beer many times back in the day.. but always managed to do so safely-ish :)

Bodynazi's a Badger? And a drunk? Well, ... "if you wanna be a Badger" ...

I think I found a sidewalk where you puked your guts out one winter's night near the Lake Street parking ramp.

I rode a newish Schwinn 3-speed to most of my classes and baseball practices from 1965-68.

I have ridden home hammered...not very fun. You know you are in a bad way when you stumble home and the drug dealers offer to help you with your bike and hold the door open for you.

BZ I went to WI (Madison) too. I found a Schwinn cruiser in the trash on Langdon had some wheels built at Yellow Jersey that was my drunken chariot. Damn those were great days.

Nice on the UW contingency! (home to arguably the best road bike riding in the US)

The student Union used to sell more alcohol per capita (however that is measured) than any drinking establishment in the US - or so I heard :)

Yes - many a time - riding up Langdon toward home (lived on the near east side) trying to keep the Schwinn Varsity in the gutter as a guide after a multi-pitcher session on the Terrace... good times for sure.

Cing - you were at UW in the late 60s? Nice - must have some stories from that era... ergo.. 'The War at Home' documentary....

In my student days there was this short cut to my flat hopping over the barriers and crossing the freeway instead of walking the long way around down and up the ramps that led underneath the freeway. Let's say that was stoopid.

The wise man said follow me...and he walked behind.

BN, my wife was an exchange student in Mad City for one lovely spring back in the early 80's. I got to visit. Best Student Union on the face of the earth, without a doubt. Good beer on tap!
Now I'm the parent of college kids, and I say Damn Shame the drinking age has gone up (MADD types, please forgive me for this heresy!), at least on college campuses. Drinking is driven underground and binge drinking is worse.

LSD I was there then, probably buying weed from the rasta guy in der rathskeller (where they served the brew in the union). I agree with you drinking should be 19.
