New forum - opening links in new window

With the new forum format, it would be nice when clicking a link to have the link open a new window. It is easy to click the "Back" button, of course, but it is nicer when you are not actually navigating away from the VNF when following a link in someone's post. It's been a long time since I've worked on websites, but I recall it is really easy to change.

    Thanks!

Jacobus, totally get that. From a usability perspective it is easier to have a new window automatically opened. I threw that out as it would be something I would do if it were my website. You don't want to have users fully navigate away from your site when something catches their interest. You want to serve that need with a click-through to a new window, while leaving your site open on their browser.

Yes there is right mouse click with macs. Just nee the right mouse and settings. Been doing it for years, even on trackpads.

With the Mac-press Control while clicking the link. A pop up menu even gives you A CHOICE of opening the link in a new window or a new tab. Once you get in the habit, it's wonderful.

    gjanney,
I've been lobbying for exactly that from the outset, to no avail...

I'd love to see a link at the bottom of the page to take you back to the main forum page, just like at the top. Having to scroll all the way up to hit the link, especially in a long thread, is kinda tedious.

    just put the same link:

"VeloNews Forums ยป Forum Questions & Feedback"

At the bottom of the page.

    Just say "NO!!" to WCP!

I agree CK, top and bottom navigation links are essential to good web browsing.

As for the links in a new window thing, its fairly agreed upon that the majority of users are annoyed by a site launching new windows. With the newer browsers you can easily open new tabs etc. if you so choose when clicking on links. Having a site decide for you and ending up with numerous open browser windows can be annoying. Whether you use FireFox, Safari or Chrome (or IE, Opera) there are ways using the mouse and settings to open new tabs or windows if you want when clicking on any link on any site.
