Winter music thread.....

So as we all head inside for too many hours staring at our basement walls, I though a Winter music thread could be good.

    To start:

Butch Walker & The Black Widows - The Spade. Just downloaded it the other day and it is fantastic. Best album I have heard in quite a while.

    Whatcha got?

    Just say "NO!!" to WCP!

I just got hipped to Ellen McIlwaine, "Up From the Skies: The Polydor Years" and I am pretty turned out by it.

It is on Spotify if you are interested.

two records that came out last summer:
Clockwork Angels by Rush. I'm a huge fan but I think this one is one of their best and they absolutely nailed it in concert. Usually the crowd kind of tunes out their new stuff at concerts but not this time.

Bear Creek by Brandi Carlile. Totally opposite end of the listening spectrum, a local girl with a huge voice doing folk-pop-country. Dave Matthews calls her "Trumpethead". She's a gifted song crafter.

+1 ChinookPass about Brandi Carlile. Also, thanks CK. On your recommendation I picked up Sprinsteen's "Wreaking Ball."

Cool, glad you liked it geo. I am still surprised by how great that album is, both musically and socially. Really great stuff that I haven't gotten tired of....

Another suggestion for those who like compilations - The Stones new GRRR is really good. A lot of songs that I never wanted to buy full albums for and a nice retrospective.

Over the years it has been my practice to mine the music recommendations made in these types of threads. Here are recommendations that have all come from this forum in the past.

    2007

    Ted Nugent-Stranglehold
Queens of the Stone Age Regular John
    Slapshot-What's at Stake
    Slapshot-Another Mistake
    Foo Fighteters-Overdrive
    Mobb Deep-Get Away
    Monomnen-Murder City Nights(Radio Birdman cover)
    Rancid-Stand your Ground
Agnostic Front-Peace is not an Option
    Slayer-South of Heaven

    2008

"Infinite Pursuit" off of the Jean Luc Ponty "Fables" CD. Also cuts off of Tony MacAlpine CDs "Edge of Insanity" and "Maximum Security" I found them to be very motivational in the spin classes I used to teach.

try googling or search at itunes: "cadence revolution"

no clue about the quality, just found it while browsing.

    Alien love secrets
    Zack wylde

My Morning Jacket, Shrift, Thao, Dissent, John Mc glaughlin, Radiohead, Gorillaz, Al Dimeloa, Califone, The Cinematic Orchestra, Quantic, DJ Bittman, The Horse Feathers, John Brown's Body, Aesop Rock, Megaphone Man, Indigenous, and Joe Bonamassa have all been providing good space between the headphones lately.

Cocteau Twins - Heaven and Las Vegas
    Zero 7 - Simple Life
    Fear - The Record
Allman Brothers - Eat a Peach
Pete Yorn - Music for the Morning After

I always find it amusing when people do the "what are you listening to" threads on forums, there is invariably one person who has a list of totally obscure music just to prove how hip they are. No mainstream music for them, they haven't sold out to the man. [rolleyes]

For my own playing, I'm really digging into Mance Lipscomb and Sam McGee tunes for some reason right now. I really like playing Lipscomb's "Cherry Ball," You Gotta Reap What You Sow," and McGee's "Railroad Blues."

Entheo, I am a huge fan of Shostakovich. Dmitri is my man. I was devastated when I found out he wrote his Cello concertos for Slava Rostropovich who was local to me when I was in DC as the musical director and conductor of the U.S. National Symphony Orchestra. He was RIGHT here and I here never got a chance to see him perform.

Our tastes are widely divergent - I sense another generational gap building. It is good driving music tho when you're weaving through traffic.
