LeMond to run for UCI presidency — Le Monde

In London for the Change Cycling Now summit, Greg LeMond told reporters this weekend that he would contest the presidency of the UCI against incumbent Pat McQuaid.

“Yes, I’m ready. I was asked and I accepted,” said LeMond. “The Change Cycling Now movement wants to change cycling. However, it is now or never to act. After another earthquake caused by the Armstrong case, another chance will not arise. If we want to restore public confidence and sponsors, we must act quickly and decisively. Otherwise, cycling will die. Riders do not understand that if we continue like this, there will soon be no money in cycling. There are fewer young people choosing cycling. If I had young children today, I would not push them to bike racing.”

Agree cycling must make a meaningful change now and the present administration is not capable of returning "credibility" to the sport. Credibility on all levels, riders union, sharing of TV revenue.

Has Lemond burnt to many bridges? Has he cultivated friends or foes within the Industry?
At first glance I like it but wonder if he'll be black balled?

The REAL question is: Will Hinault support Lemond?

this would be a great move; lemond is creditable, passionate about the sport, committed to cleaning it up (and has the scars to prove it), and well liked if not loved by cycling fans around the world (excepting diehard LA fans like polish & spear).

@ yomike: of course he will support Lemond. By attacking him when he's most vulnerable. It worked in '86, right?

Lemond has said he would serve on an interim basis until someone more qualified is found.

Outside of Lance/Trek the sport loves Greg.

Ultimately Greg is an interim solution used to dislodge Pat. He is widely respected in the sport and would be recieved warmly

Lemond as UCI interem president would restore much needed credibility to the orginization, something it desperately needs. Lemond's long history of campaigning for clean cycling and his history as a TDF winner are the most relevant qualifications for the job. Great move, Greg!

No way. Don't trust any of them. The ones that speak out the loudest about how clean they are end up being the dirtiest.

I'd rather have a self-admitted and reformed doper than a denier from the age of doping.

    Time for a clean start.

Ironically, I suspect Vaughters would do a good job at it.

Lemond probably has decent europen support

    Like Lance Armstrong?

Who has creditable accusations against Lemond?

Great, put the guy who has done the MOST to DESTROY cycling in CHARGE of cycling. Might as well appoint the other D-Bags to his cabinet:

    Kimmage...Secretary of Book Deals.
    Walsh...UnderSecretary of Book Deals
    Ashenden...Secretary of TestScienceFail
    Skinsdude...Secretary of PR for Skinsstuff
    Betsy.....FDA, mainly the F part.

"oh, but it is Lance who destroyed cycling waawaa"

No - Lance was the BEST thing to happen to cycling since BigMig.
And BigMig was the BEST thing to happen to Cycling since Hinault.
And Eddy was the BEST thing to happen since Hinault.

"Oh, but those guys destroyed cycling too waawaa"

    No they did not.

Greg and Betsy and David and Paul and Ashenden etc destroyed cycling. SkinsDude is just jumping on the PR Train.

Lemond certainly has some kind of character and brand recognition but skillsets and experience in leading, managing, and running an organization of this magnitude? Not that immediately come to mind.

Romney! He was able to save the Winter Olympics and we know he has a zero tolerance policy on any and all drugs.

Maybe THIS is the Presidency that he was meant to enjoy.

    Its Monday.

    You funny!

Eddy had a comeback that we all missed? Must have gotten lost in all the fuss accorded a lying, cheating doper from Texas.

I believe you mean that he and the others have done the most to destroy the type of cycling that you like, the kind that is full of dopers and cheaters. If they want to destroy that type of cycling then I am all for it. And I believe that there are many in the world who also want that.

Just to be clear, LA didn't do shit for cycling. He did it for himself.

The reason I think he may be blackballed is the money behind the sport has a big say so and Lemond's relationship with sponsors is shaky at best besides his loose cannon reputation.

+1 jpouchet -- Lemond has name recognition but no managerial experience that I'm aware of. Ideally the UCI would hire someone qualified for the post but keep Greg on board in a high profile advisory capacity.

Polish, your analogy is all wrong. LA is like the serial killer with bodies he buried in his basement. Greg is like the nosy neighbor who kept telling the police to go dig in the guy's basement. But since the serial killer seemed like a pretty cool guy to have in the neighborhood, no one would listen to the nosy neighbor.

You are like the serial killer's mother who never believes what her son is truly capable of.
