Amazing. Scratches and bruises for the little passenger.

Amazing. Scratches and bruises for the little passenger.

I've often thought the passengers in those trailers looked a lot safer than the pilots up front.
Ben
Glad the injuries weren't worse. At least the child was physically okay but the metal trauma could be huge! And the rider/dad breaking a vertebrae - ouch! That will take some serious recovery time.
Don't like to say it but: Lawyer Up!
Jury will be all over the driver of the car.
riding in drizzle/rain in pitch dark (6 PM) = I would use a F-load of bright rear flashers - especially w/ a kid in tow. Sounds like he had the 'joe safety' reflective vest on + a rear flasher - but clearly it was not enough.
Currently I use 2 x planet bike 2w red rear flashers (they hurt your eyes to look at them) + reflective strips on my booties - as I'm set to leave work now at 6;15 PM....
Too bad it was a Prius that hit him - in this case you'd want it to be an Escalade or a Hummer [regarding suing the living p!ss out of them] - then again, if that was the case the kid would have 'prolly died.
Those things have always looked like death traps to me; especially this time of year. Nevertheless, that driver better feel very very bad.
Don't be surprised how quickly and durable kids are with recovering from trauma of crashes. My two boys some years back were in the trailer being towed by our tandem, a fast descent and an unexpected tight turn combined with an unfortunately timed wheel mishap... the kids didn't turn over, but the sound of the trailer dragging on the pavement combined with a most unsettling feeling up front as captain caused a moment of panic for everyone. No one injured except two little boys who did not want to get back in. They did. In weeks they were begging for rides again. Kids are amazing.
that picture is sickening.
on the topic of kids being amazing:
one time i got distracted hitching up the Adams Trail-a-bike and forgot to put the cotter pin in. Me and the boy ride 3kms through heavy neighbourhood traffic. While navigating over a curb onto the bike path at the turnaround point, the trail-a-bike decoupled. The sound of scraping metal across the pavement is a sound I will never forget, nor the sight of my kid face-surfing across the path. OMG did i feel bad. Thankfully, no injuries. I told him that we shall not speak of this to his mother. Of course, as soon as we got home, he burst into tears and outed me to mom. Am amazed she didn't kill me on the spot. Next time out on the trail-a-bike he was all over the hitch to make sure it was properly secured.
wow, very lucky little guy for sure!!
agreed BN, I would have at least a 1/2 dozen bright lights on the trailer with a kid in tow.
I use two Serfas 5 LED flasher on the left seat tube, these hurt your eyes also, a blackburn mars on the seat tube, very bright, and a light on the back of the helmet, plus reflective stuff on clothing, bag, etc....
