Kudos to Kryptonite

I lost a key to my oldest Kryptonite lock, circa 2000. Got on the Kryptonite website Monday and ordered a new key for $6. It arrived today and works. All I needed was the other key for the serial number on it.

I've had two locks replaced by them after thieves caught on to the weak points of that generation. That wasn't much harder beyond having to go to the post office to send them back.

I'll buy another when the time comes. Don't know when that will be. Three locks suits me well and none seem ready for replacement. (They do benefit a lot from occasional doses of wet Finish Line lube as my bikes are often ridden and locked in the rain.)

Kryptonite recovered pretty quick from the point when it was found that you could pick one with a Bic pen. So glad to see their recovery as they have always worked to make great locks.

I also have a ten year old Kryptonite that keeps on keeping on after they sent me a new key.

For those that don't recall the problem with the older locks, it might be a helpful reminder in case you still have one of the compromised models.

It is a little alarming to think that a thief could just read the serial number off my lock on my commuter that I park in the same place every day and order up a key, but that's highly unlikely I suppose.

"Wired News tested Brennan's claims. A brand new Kryptonite Evolution 2000 was opened in seconds using a Bic pen. After cutting four small slits in the end of the pen's barrel to ease it in, the lock opened with a single twist.
Brennan, 25, of San Francisco, said he successfully opened two Kryptonite locks, an Evolution 2000 and an older Kryptonite Mini lock."

There are several Youtube videos showing how it's done.

I remember the Bic Pen fiasco, I sent them my old lock they sent a brand new one, it didn't matter how old, they just replaced it, they even replaced specially branded (performance and others) locks with new kryptonite locks.

I've had the same experience with keys, as long as you have one of them, they'll send you more.

They've always had great customer service.

zoot, the number is on the key, not the lock. Just don't lend your key to the thief!

Ben the key got mixed within the change he handed the panhandler.

Hey, the key was shiny. Shiny things all look the same to me. They look great but seldom do dink for me.

Never looked for the serial number. Good to learn it's on the other key I lost years ago.... I mean gave to the panhandler.

I gave up shiny things when I left my six figure job to live in a place 5 minutes from great trails, 15 minutes from great skiing, and in a house I haven't locked (except for vacations) in 15 years, all in a town of 75k with 9 bike shops. It was a fair trade.

The only shiny thing I have left is a filling in one of my molars.
