    HI,

How do you guys value older bikes? USe eBay / Craigslist? I have a Merckx Corsa 01 in primo condition (link below) - was one of the 90s steel models w/ Campy 10 speed. New wheels, cassette, tape otherwise pretty much as it was.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/37449440@N08/3440494824/in/photostream/

On eBay, etc no Corsa 01s, all Corsa Extras but frames in this condition appear to be 900 and up.

Any thoughts on how to price it? It does not have too many miles sad as that is to say...

    Thanks-

    J

Very difficult to gauge, personally I really like that frame and color scheme.
I believe they were made from deda zero that doesn't have the appeal of
    MX or SLX.
Hold off selling until after the holidays, maybe even until spring.
A Merckx in that condition will be worth more in the spring than before the Holidays, IMO.
Best bet is Ebay, start with a reserve to see how it goes.
Since your frame looks practically NOS I'd say $900 as a starting
    price for F/F/HS.

Selling older bikes is challenging, you have to find a person who wants a used bike, have them be the right size for the bike and being willing to pay for the bike. You mostly just have to wait for the right person or sell much lower than new AL bikes in my experience.

Bike does look good though, change the bar tape before you post on ebay it will look even cleaner.

I had similar issues last few years with my MX Leader. For what the market prices seemed to be, I just ended up keeping it. I figure my wife has "art" hanging in the house that is worth more than that bike, so I might as well hang up the bike and call it art.

Yeah, it's a toss up between having more "stuff" which I dislike and not being foolish because at anything under a grand, I might as well keep it.

In fact, one of our club riders is from Mexico and he is gathering items for a charity and club near his hometown. I will give him a number of items I have "just because" as I'd much rather they be put to good use and have someone get some enjoyment out of the sport.

That being said, the Merckx is pretty and has some memories, so not sure I am up for parting with it quite yet....

    Don't sell that bike dude.

    (edit)
Here's the thing. Some frames are just...frames. I see the Scott CF bike in the background.

But 5, 10-15 years from now...you will regret selling the Merckx.

Nobody gives a $hit about a CF Scott. You will clear out the sales floor and the mechanics bay when you stroll into a shop on that cherry Merckx.

I don't think it is worth selling. On a bad week you would be lucky to get $700 on a good one a little over a grand. There is really not that much love out there for older steel bikes (with carbon forks especially).

I would just hold on to it and ride the crap out of it. That bike should be worth at least $1500, but no one will pay that.

And dude, that is one nice looking bike. I would bet you would be hard pressed to find a better all day rider than that one.

There is nothing better than going out for a ride on a sunny day with a chrome fork. I used to look down at my bike just to watch the sun reflect off of mine.

Compare to Richard Sachs, Eisentraut, Moulton, Vanilla, etc. Quality USA builders. Or a Pegoretti, Colnago, Gios.
I assume your group is record.
divide price of record group with a quality USA built lugged frame, divide by half, there is your price.
Unfortunately at this time people do not appreciate quality brazing, steel frames are works of art.
Strip down an old Italian lugged frame and you will see.

Personally the idea of donating it to a Mexican club is awsome. Rode donated Cinnelis on velodrome in Guadalajara. Encouraging racers in Mexico is great. Great fun racing there.

Well if I were in the market for a NOS bike and you still have the original chrome fork, I'd buy it off you now. But i'm in the market for a MTB frame that I'm building up this Winter.

I am with KR on this. Definitely don't sell that Merckx. Chrome chainstays too. Steel frames have some sort of magic to them that old AL frames and Crabon frames don't have and don't manage to keep. I'd say the same for Ti. But that's me.

If anything, turn it into a restoration project and build it up NOS.

It's like my 65 BSA Lightning. I don't even have to start it up. Just look at the chrome tank and sit on the thing and I forfeit any desire to sell the thing.

Yeah, man. With a chrome fork...I could just clean it up nice, have a glass of wine and just LOOK at it and be content.

I would never sell that bike, tho I was hoping for a while that Hoshie would, as it looks to me about my size.

Beautiful, except for all those decals on the wheels.... and a +1 for the chrome fork.

Steel is real, and I cannot get a hardon for carbon.

Decals are long gone as well as that old tape. Yo mike, i could still be persuaded...

If I hang on to it, I need a quill stem that fits and seems eBay has plenty.
