New Years Resolution, ride more.

Its a week early, but not too early to begin the plan for next year. This year was tough with balancing work and family. The job was really busy. I was coaching the boy's sports team and trying to get in rides whenever I could. I raced sporadically relegated to the role of leadout as I suffered through races. I gained 25lbs. Last week in a training ride a teammate told me I go fast for a "fat guy".

That was the straw that broke the camels back. My wife okay'd the purchase of a new race bike (Specialized Venge). I turn 45 in a few weeks and move up in age. While I do not harbor hope of a total return to glory, i am going to ride more and lose that 25lbs.

i'm on vacation the next two weeks. i plan on getting in some serious mileage to kick off the new year. okay, weather calls for snow tomorrow. i will get on that stoopid trainer and ride friday.

Set small short term goals. Weekly mileage, skipping dessert, no beer on weekdays. Raise the bar slowly.

For me it will be to start swimming. I was able to lose 20 lbs over the second half of the year so no need for weight loss. I thought about racing again then realized how much work was involved and I really do not enjoy crits much. So my goal in 2013 is to do a strint (I think that is what they are called) tri. No way I would have predicted that goal a year ago!

Ride more to prep for my first century ride. Start running more to prepare for the Bloomsday 12 run here in Spokane the first Sunday in May. And start doing Pilates again. And yes fewer desserts so I have room for that beer on the weekends. <G>

I'm going to buck the trend I see here. I will probably ride less and certainly not as hard. 2012 was a once in a lifetime year for me. I will never put my knees through that again. It was totally worth it, but I have no desire to repeat it.

Getting strong enough to ride the many thousands of feet of climbing on a fixie was real work. (Cycle Oregon.) A lot of climbing that was not really fun. I love to climb. This year I want that love back. I want climbing to be fun. Back on the geared bike.

I have also been trying to stay ahead of last year's mileage the past 5 years. I missed badly in 2011 because on my accident, but am about to better my 2010 miles (77 to go). (Not much of an increase, but fix gear miles went from 5200 to a lifetime high of 6200.) But this year's riding came at a cost. I burned out. I was easily on track to set new mileage highs until Cycle Oregon. I came home burned out. Going hard was no longer fun. Riding miles lost its appeal. It's taken work to do just enough to set the new record. Time to back off and enjoy riding more.

    My resolution? Enjoy riding!

I am setting a goal to get back to "decent racing shape" by the end of March for the first big road race of the season in my my area.

I've been dealing with a knee injury from a triathlon I did back in September so right now my goal is to finally run good mileage again after several sessions with the chiro (deep tissue massage, muscle electro-stimulation, laser, grafton (sp?), kynesiwatchamacallit tape). My goals are 2 half iron distance races in July and September (no walking) and a few sprint and Olympic distance stuff in my neighborhood.

Hah! Love all you guys starting tri's.....Come to the dark side, fellas. We have cookies!,

    ;-)

Still trying tomdealmwith my running issues, but things may finally be improving. Now on my 8th consecutive day of running and feeling good. Achilles not flaring up, etc.

My original goal was to give IM Louisville a shot in late August, but I may be better served by focusing on. Just building a solid foundation w/0 the pressure of an IM looming. If that is the case, the the Racine Half IM will be my bog goal of the yer again. Trying to follow a Maafetone-esque program for both running and riding.....but it is hard to keep the HR down at the new training center I joined. 8 people all hooked upon Computrainers tends to fire up the competitive juices!

    Just say "NO!!" to WCP!

Better than cookies CK, tri's have women (in shape) wearing swimsuits with their ages written on their legs.

Never saw that at a bike race....

Ride more and be ready for the competitive group rides and do a few races. Keeping the baseline form now through running and skiing starts asap since we got dumped on big time! Should have a solid base when I get back on the road with the studded tires.

My mileage will be higher than last year, certainly more enjoyable.

My main goal is to ride without crashing. Knock on wood, so far I've managed that...
