Maffetone'ing 2013, Who's in?

After years of group hammer-festing, I've decided to try Maffetone's base building. I bought his book for 17$ on amazon, a new polar ft1 from eBay 36$... And come this summer i will hopefully be winning my share of the local weekend championships (priceless). I've been on the rollers, Netflix is set to Battlestar Galactica and the HR monitor set to 137. So far so fun!

Thanks huckleberry & swg for sparking my interest.

    Anyone else?

No prob G-dawg. I'm amazed that Huck stuck with it and has seen good results. I was thinking about the Maffetone method this afternoon as I was spinning away in my shed. I have used it to some degree over the years, but I never really knew what I was doing until I stumbled across it at one the barefoot running sites I frequent.

One issue I can't seem to resolve is my number: 180-44=136. Do I subtract 10 for the rare kidney disease I have had since birth (and the Triamterene/HCTZ & Potassium Chloride I take)? Do I add back some for the consistent training (5+ days/week)?

There is the issue of tracking the target number when I run - I don't bother. Since I hate to wear a HRM, I go by feel. It is easy for me to run sub-8 miles in my target range, so I'm not concerned about tracking.

I started today. It's really not much different than the way I used to get ready to race. 6-8 weeks of steady miles before moving to the big ring mixed with weight training 2-3 days/week.
I have a little trouble with the number too. My 54 years say 126 but 130-134 was the least I could maintain.
I Haven't ridden outside in a month due to a hernia repair and the holidays. The system does seem to fit well with me easing back into training and losing 15+ lbs over the next 4 months. Since my race age will be 55 next year, I plan on doing some tt's and the state RR next year.

The past two weeks I've been on the trainer an hour a day at my target HR (125'ish) and thought I'd continue that for the next couple months. I was carrying some decent fitness into December and don't want to lose that but don't want to burn out doing intense stuff during the off-season. Probably pick up the book to get the specifics but so far this seems to meet my physical and mental needs on the bike.

+1 CB2. I enjoy riding my bike too much for that program.

Daaaaaang Gina! This is not so easy as it use to be. Holding 137HR requires more effort than it did 4 weeks ago. Its not so easy to pay attention to Netflix (Star Trek Enterprise now) like it use to be. In years past I use to only do 2 short sessions on the rollers per week (winter) and didn't really look forward to it. Now I'm riding almost everyday doing 2-3 times the amount of time. I look forward to it too. It will be interesting to see how my spring benchmark rides go this year.

    Keep on Maffetone'ing!
