Hello Portlanders and others in the PNW considering this ride. Looks like my wife and I are committing to the date with another local (so cal) couple who plan to ride. They happen to have some family not too far away.

Our request: recommendation for an LBS with Tandems available for rent.

Tai, if you are reading this, do you have any contacts at Co-Motion that can point us in the right direction?

For a weekend of riding I'd rather not risk damage to our awesome Canondale rocket ship. The hassle of packaging, assembly, then taking it apart and repacking, etc. for at most three rides just isn't worth the grief.

Anyone else planning on doing this ride?

    Thanks

    JP

jp, you might try Coventry Cycle Works, SE Hawthorne and SE 20th Avenue, Portland. (503-220-7723) They specialize in tandems and recumbents. I don't know that they rent, but they probably know who does.

JP...let me see what I can do...worst case scenario, I'll take my co-motion down and leave it at my dad's place for you to pick up.

    Thanks Ben, I'll check tomorrow.

Tai, don't sweat it. You have enough going on already. Unless you plan to do the ride with your oldest on the back of the tandem!

JP...might not be too much trouble for me. I go down to PDX at least three-four times between now and September. I don't have a line on any tandems you can borrow/rent at the moment. I'll be using my Santana to pilot a blind rider during training rides this summer so that won't be available. The Co-Motion is currently set up for riding with my son, but I can just take off the child stoker kit for you, especially now that he's really getting into riding his own bike. We've got time, so let me see what I can do for you.

Tai, expect I'll be dropping by to visit you well before the August ride. i did send out on inquirey to the folks over at the Portland Tandem Club. That may also turn up a few options.

My friends who are organizing this outing have family in Portland. So we may decide to ship our bikes over to their house and put them together on Friday afternoon when we arrive. I think there are a few other nearby riders who have tandem cases we can borrow.

If you go the shipping route, I hear the easiest way to ship a tandem from CA to PDX/SEA is by Amtrak.

JP, I am on the flight home from Austin right now. Was charged $50 from Seattle to Austin, and only $30 on the way back. Sending this information as it seems a lot less expensive than shipping if you are considering the option.

Thanks GJ, we've locked-in the dates for the event. Likely taking our own bike as my wife and I have all the dimensions dialed-in just right. With a good case/box the frame will be fine. Wheels are pretty robust as well but arriving a day early will enable us to have an LBS make any needed adjustments / repairs.
