Quick Austin review

Took my bike to Austin from the 25th until today. Weather turned very cold (morning with wind chill was in the teens). Got in a couple rides, which was less than I'd planned, but I wasn't on my winter bike so all was good.

Bicycle Sports is a great shop. One guy at the Lamar location was bend-over-backward helpful getting me some local maps and routes. Unfortunately for me, I didn't pre-load Garmin Communicator on my tablet, so I couldn't program in the rides.

While Austin seems to be a cycling town, Texas isn't the best place I've been to ride. Cars seem to give minimal space (though I only got one out-and-out F-You!). They will also regularly make right turns in front of you without signaling (whether you're on a bike or in a car) so you have to be pretty heads-up and expect them to do so.

Would like to come back when the weather is a bit nicer, especially since may local shops have loads of organized groups rides and I really wish I could have taken advantage of those so that I could have spent less time trying not to get lost and more time wearing out the legs!

I've heard similar things about Austin not being terribly bike friendly. I'll stick to my rural IL and MO roads and nearly annual trips to France

jacobus - where in rural IL do you ride? I spent serious time riding in college around Danville and Olivet.

I've done some rides outside of Austin, not super friendly, but not much worse than Santa Fe, NM
that weather your getting was what was blowing through here, some super cold temps, couple of my rides have been in single digit temps

Other side of the state, Hab. I typically ride a little SE of St Louis. Monroe County to be exact.

jacobus, lots of great options around edwardsville too; country roads, old route 66, and the paved bike trails (over 100 miles)

Yep. I've ridden some the trails near Edwardsville. I'm on the south end of the metro area though so it's not terribly convenient
