I haven't tried TI stuff....briefly looked into it a couple times, as well as "Finding Freestyle"

You wanna stir up some schitt, though....go start a "Waht do you think of Total Immersion?" thread over in ST. Grab your popcorn and enjoy! Almost as good as "aero vs weight"!!

    Just say "NO!!" to WCP!

Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions. I think tomorrow will be my first day in the pool. Have no expectations, will just give it a try. It's only two blocks from home so why not.

I typically say that I stopped racing because with 3 kids time became a problem. That it true but it also stopped being fun. I had a coach who provided weekly trainings rides. Group riding was out of the question and it sucked the fun out of it. So I am willing to follow a training program, but will need to keep it in perspective.

You're on the right track by just diving in and swimming a little. Sure, you could take a very calculated approach to your training, but you previously mentioned that tactic took some of the fun out of racing.

Key thing is to get a few swims and runs in every week. Nothing major or hardcore, but enough to acclimate your body to the training. Keep riding and you will be just fine by race day.

Swimming is why more people should do what I do and race duathlons.

The one nice thing about being a former swimmer was that I didn't bat an eye at the prospect of shaving my _legs_ for bike races. If you thought shaved legs felt weird, try your entire body. Agh, the memories...and the razor burns...and the chlorine. Nope, don't miss swimming much, now do I!

Really, really, really: I think even just a few hours with a swim coach working on form would really help you enjoy your time in the pool more. Swimming with poor form is a lot like churning into a 40mph headwind, while wearing toestraps that are too loose.

You said you were open to a training plan, here you go:

    2X Week Swim
    2X Week Bike
    2X Week Run

My first tri was a pool swim which was a lot less intimidating, a MTB leg and a 5k, I think I trained for about three months using the advanced training plan outlined above. I had a blast, learned a ton, and adjusted from there.

I learned to swim at 27 to help shoulder surgery recovery. It's like anything, first I could do one length and then heave for 5 minutes, then the next time it was 2 lengths, etc. The key for me was I learned to swim at a pace I could swim all day comfortably. Then I tried to go 'faster.'

I have to admit when I first read this I had one of those floaters that reside in the vitreous in your eye- the tiny things that when you try to focus on them they seem to dart away- anyway- I had one of those going on and it made me read your request as:

Thinking of DOPING my first tri this year, need help

So I got a good laugh about that. Then I made sure to quote you Velominati rule # 42:

"A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run."

    Good luck out there!

While we hate cancer, isn’t it better to just donate some money and not have to advertise the fact for the next five years? You may as well get “tryhard wanker” tattooed on your forehead. Or you may well be a bogan.
