warning: cycling related: 1st team ride of 2013

1st team ride of 2013 on Saturday - 1st geared ride in probably 6+ months and 1st ride outside without a backpack on (commuting)

.... and it went pretty well. 60 miles in 3 hrs. Some guys went 73 miles with a significant climb - but as my longest race will be 50 minutes - I don't need to sit on a bike for more than 3 (2 even) hours or deal with getting shelled on a 1 mile climb = cut off with a couple of other guys for the 'short route.'

I can say I felt pretty good and felt strong even after 2.5+ hrs of riding. I was expecting to suffer not having ridden much more than my 30 min commutes + 1-2/week 1 hr spin sessions + occasional (not often enough) Tabata sessions.

This cross training helps- treadmill 15% grade 11.5 mph 30 second sprints + my ice climbing (and climbing training) and resistance training seems to be working .. + the plant based diet too of course :)

.. and I got my 2013 Castelli team kit - much better quality than Primal aside from the F-ed up designed knee and arm warmers. The bibs are pretty snazzy.

= now movivated to improve cycling fitness and see if I can be race ready by April. In 1 month I'll go on the Boulder weekend no-wait weekend ride to get my suffering to a HNL (ho' 'nuddah level)

    Nice job....Carter Lake?

Me, I did 2 1/2 hours on the Computrainer yesterday, followed by a 2 mile run on the treadmill.

As noted previously, riding the COmputrainer is a whole lot more tolerable in a group setting. Lots of people climbed off between 1 1/14 and 1 1/2 hours, so there was a bit of a lull in the middle. but then a second group came in for my final 40 minutes, which brought the energy level back up for my final 30 minutes.

    Just say "NO!!" to WCP!

Cosmic - yep Carter - I went right over to 95th before the turn off to head up.

2.5 hrs on a stationary bike? No kidding? Jeebus man. I can barely do more than 60 minutes - 90 tops and I need some caffeine + an interesting video/movie to help that along

You must be training for a half or full IM...

BN - thanks for the "warning". Next time, please add (OT) so that we'll be extra sure that it isn't another LA/doping thread. Ha!

Did my first ride of the year Saturday. First time on a saddle in 4 weeks and only the second time in 6 weeks because of a leg injury. Sixty-six miles of agony and a helpful reminder why I ride year-round, regardless of the weather.

    Good stuff.

I rode 80k on Friday, quite interesting. In the saddle was fine, but with the rib injury riding out of the saddle is out of question at moment (I tried) which completely changes the riding dynamic, and not for the better. Got my exercize in but not fun.

It was gorgeous in Boulder on Saturday and LOTS of big packs (18 - 40 cyclists) out and about which was great to see! I got 40+ miles in while staring at the snowy peaks. Not bad for a 1st ride of the year.

    PS Great thread title! :-)

yes ma'am - there were about a jillion cyclists out over the weekend (Saturday being a bit nicer than yesterday). Saw many many teams - boys and girls + tons of rec riders too.

The vehicular traffic was pretty nice and understanding of all the larger groups [that I saw]. Only got honked at a couple of times - nothing too aggressive = good day.

    @ BN -

Yup, that is the plan. If my running holds out, that is! So far, so good.

Like I said, in a group setting, and on Computrainers, it isn't that bad. Big screen TV's, lots of music and people to chit-chat / challenge you. Hard part for me is that I am going at least 1/2 to 1 hour longer than most people there, so the last bit is kinda tough.

Lucky people getting to ride outside. We have crummy weather with icy roads ans the skiing is not that good. Another week on the trainer.

How is the fit on the Castelli clothes?

Did you have to order a size larger than other brands?

low 60's and sunny here. i got in 40 miles out to the beach and back. the wind was out of the north. the gulf was coke bottle green and flat. i spent the afternoon on the veranda swilling box wine and reading trashy novels.

If you are not hallucinating, you are not trying hard enough

Tater - yes on Castelli clothing - had to order larger. The L arm warmers are like compression sleeves on me - not going to work too well... I think I got L bibs, XL jerseys, can't remember the size of the skinsuit - L or XL and the XL LS jersey fits like a glove - won't be able to fit but 1 thin baselayer under it - or one snug SS jersey. In general - 1 size up from regular PI sizing where I'm a M bib-shorts and L tops (v snug).

Man am I envious. 80-minutes on the trainer yesterday and a 65-minute run today. I don't ride outside when it's under 40-degrees.
