Hey.
I am shopping around for new wheels for a mtn bike build. Its going to be used for Xc races. I would like to get crossmax but as a law student, i'm not sure if i have the funds. I found a good deal on some spinergy wheels. now i've read comments about them on the net but wanted to tap the velo community. any advice is appreciated on these or any other wheels i should look at.
bike is a hardtail, i'm 150 lbs, riding in the MW, cheaper the better, although i do not want to compensate on quality/reliability.

There are good reasons used Spinnergy wheels can be found cheap....you have been warned.

how "new" do you want? i have a sweet bulletproof set i may be willing to part with, for substantially less than you'd get "new". send me a pm if you're interested.
edit: just realized you're probably looking for disc compatible. if so, never mind.

XT hubs with a pair of Stan's Crest rims? Light and tubeless. XT hubs are usually pretty economical although I don't think they come with 6 bolt disc mounts and are only centerlock. Avid make centerlock rotors now too though. I don't much about Spinergy wheels other than I don't see them much around here. I believe some of their Rev-X wheels with the 8 "spokes" were problematic. The thing about Shimano is that you can trust that they will work the way they always work. A bit like a McDonald's hamburger. Not the best in the world, not really cutting edge but you know what you are getting. Easy to fix and parts are available.
I do have a 32 hole XTR qr front hub I would be willing to part with dirt cheap. All the mountainbikes in my house have 15mm through axles so the qr hub is kind of unwanted.

I was referring to the old carbon flat spoked versions. I have no opinion on anything newer, as I never see them around here.

You have teeth and a face no? Then stay the hell away from anything Spinergy. I was in a race when I heard some godawful sound and it was someone behind me hitting the ground after their rear Spinergy Rev-X Super Stiff self destructed at 25 mph. It was not pretty.

Totally agree, Spinergy wheels are somewhat notorious for a lack of long term reliability. Which if cost is an issue I also assume durability is an issue.

I had a Spinergy real wheel that I rode on a frankenbike for a couple of years.
It was a 24 "spoke", (I think), wheel with nylon "noodle" spokes that were post tensioned in place
and rode really nice.
It was very light, the problem is they are designed "on the edge" and when one of the "spokes" broke, the wheel basically collapsed. It was slow motion and I didn't crash, but I was stunned at how it folded up.
I would get something else. -
