Superbowl Rant

    This is why neither sport can hold a candle to soccer. 90 min of play lasts 90 minutes, as it should.

    and still nothing happens....

    ;-)

    As for being a sport, if it isn't timed or have a finish line or an objective scoring system, it ain't a sport.

    Football -sport
    Soccer - sport
    Cycling -sport
    golf - sport
    Auto racing - sport

    Gymnastics - not a sport.
    Diving - not a sport
    Competitive dancing - DEFINITELY not a sport.

    ;-)

    Just say "NO!!" to WCP!

    Had a hard time even watching the first half. I think I'm done with the NFL. I'll stick to College Basketball and MLB.

    O.C. re: ice hockey. Those two long intermissions are needed. For the players. Ice does not stand up to a hard hockey game, even at high school level. After 20 minutes, it does not remotely resemble the wonderful surface at the start. And you can only do the required Zamboni laps so fast. (Now, as a spectator, especially as a kid, those Zambonis are fun to watch. 4 wheel power drifts every turn. And a skilled operator gets it very close to perfect every lap.)

    And in hockey, they play a real 60 minutes. Look at those players when they come in from their turn. They're toast.

    Now, all the extra time-outs for commercials? That's BS in my book. I solve that the same way I solve commercials in all sports. I listen on the radio while doing something else. (Those commercials are a primary reason I don't own a TV. Seems to me if companies are going to take up my viewing time pushing their products, they should be paying for the devices I have to watch it on.)

    They may not be paying for the devices, but theya re certainly paying for everything else. That is the way it is set-up...the government grants the companies broadcast licenses, but basically requires them to provide the service to the user free of charge (at least for over-the-air signals). It is the role of commercials to allow broadcasters to make money. With out commercials, you would be looking at a black screen....

    CK - lest we forget:

    Chess - sport.

    And much harder physically than one would think. Also more interesting to watch (provided the analysists know what they're talking about) than a football game.

    Yes Ben, it's those during-play breaks that are mind-numbing. 20 min play takes like 40 min?!?

    O.C. and C.K., chess. Scoring, yes! Timed? Yes in serious competition. Finish line? Yes, the back row where pawns get queened. Athletic? Show me a pole vaulter who can clear a castle.

    i have a far more arbitrary dividing line -- perspiration (due to physical exertion, not nerves) = sport, lack thereof = game.

    e.g.:
    football = sport
    baseball = game
    cycling = sport
    golf = game
    basketball = sport
    chess = game

    Riddle me this. How much more $ did the bar operators in America make with a 30 min power delay?. Just enough time for one more drink per person times how many people were in bars for the game? My guess, a lot.

    I enjoy American football, but it doesn't hold my attention the way it used to.

    I honestly think it is all the padding and helmets and stuff. Guys no longer resemble anything familiar to me as human beings.

    //so i calculated, based on ave number of plays in a game and ave time per play between the whistles, how much actual action there is in a game. it came out to @ 10 minutes.//

    An handegg game is about 120 plays at an average of 6 seconds each. That's 12 minutes of actual play, divided between 3 separate teams on each side (offense, defense, special plays). In other words, any given *starter* plays about 5 minutes.

    So I'd certainly eliminate "perspiration due to physical exertion" from the "sport" of handegg. If they perspire, that's because they are morbidly obese and walking up a flight of stairs will have them similarly heavily perspiring and out of breath.

    The play-by-play of a handegg game goes something like this: huddle for 30 seconds, line up, pile up, and repeat!

    JAH@ We had loads of fun, but I am Sure that Bob isn't so happy about it today

    Hey Jah,it was a heck of a game (in the second half). Ravens played better they deserved to win. Niners made it exciting, my only gripe was near the end when they called three passes instead of using the pistol to try and score.
    Otherwise at my age all sports are just a game,I don't carry it over into my life. My son will be bummed all week wondering why the 9ers coulda did this or woulda done that. :^)

    Sorry SF, it's not "foot ball" but "brush flop", as in a defender brushes against an attacking player in the box and watch them flop, with bonus points for style and if they're latin, writhing in agony. Of course in a matter of moments they recover miraculously.

    As for football,

    That was the sad thing about Chip Kelly leaving U of O as football coach. No huddle offense made Oregon games exciting to watch...

    Entheobama, play nice. You know damn well building 7 got swept up and buried faster than the amount of time the FAA would spend examining the cause of a piper cub crashing. Unless it had been transporting Senator Paul Wellstone.

    And last but not least, not sure how fans of cycling have any business criticizing other sports for what they perceive as an activity where spectators are forced to endure long stretches of boring activity, with just a smattering of excitement now and then all supported by entourages of non-players performing logistics support duties.

    Of course, you have the confidence of knowing that when a winner is declared he/she deserves to be considered the winner and that no foul play has occurred not incompetence among the officials involved.

    * - disclaimer - I didn't watch the Superbowl game so perhaps not entitled to have an opinion.

    What people consider a "sport" or "not a sport" is not something I care a whit about. If you like it and want to watch it, so be it. If you don't, PRESS THE BUTTONS ON YOUR REMOTE! Rabid fans I can understand....people who dis other sports fans, no matter the sport/game, need to find someting else to complain about.
