Anyone running a one by ten drivetrain using a clutch derailleur? Do you use a chain guide? Did you try without first but dropped chains often? Just went that way myself but I did not get a chain guide yet. I did a two our ride tonight and everything was golden but the trails near where I live are pretty lame. I'll probably do a proper shore ride next week and I need to replace my bb so it may be an opportune time to chuck on a bb mount guide. Just not sure how necessary a guide is.

    Lance who??

Are you using a Shadow+ or a Type 2? You can adjust the tension of the Shadow+ if you do start dropping your chain.

One of my coworkers is running a Sram Type 2 on a Nomad w/o a guide and doesn't seem to have a problem. He rides the bike to it's capacity too.

One of the guys in our group that went to AZ for some warm dirt was running a Shimano 1x10 set up without a chain guide (on a hartail). I would say that he dropped his chain once per hour on average. While we were packing our bikes he was discussing what chain guide to buy. I think that he is leaning toward a K-edge.

Yes I have an XTR Shadow plus and I have adjusted the clutch tension a few times. Part of the need for a guide I visual. It looks like I need one but boy is it ever quiet with no front derailleur. Even with the plus derailleur before the chain would I guess bounce off the front derailleur.

For an old geezer still running 9 speed stuff on my Moots, what are we referring to as a clutch Derailleur?? That one is new to me.

It's like a stiffer spring you can turn off to take the wheel off and turn back on to minimize chain slap and I suppose chain suck too. With the added spring tension a lot of people have been successful running a 1x without a chain guide.

Meh, I turn mine up to eleven!

Ok, I havn't yet but the possibilities for being able to go 1X here in CO even for my fat arse are intriguing.

No it's not spring tension. It's a one way friction clutch. The bottom pivot will rotate backwards normally but not forward so the chain barely bounces. SRAM has what the call type 2 and has a non adjustable roller clutch. Shimano calls theirs plus. Shadow is the low profile model plus clutch. And that feature really helps the chain stay put, no chain suck, no dropped chains with a front derailleur but a little more force needed to downshift.

Andy, I was trying to explain it in layman's terms. The Shimano is a tension band around a one way bearing that is adjusted with a 5.5mm (or 7/32"). The XTR used to come with a wrench that also acted as a clasp for the mechanism. The Shimano rep was in on Thursday and showed us how to adjust and test the tension on a Zee.

Fair enough cb. I was listening to guy suggesting that all you had to do was take your regular derailleur pivot apart and put the spring in the other hole.
