It is actually sad. This guy was totally unprepared for being a public figure. He got eaten alive...

Avoiding eye contact?!?! What kind of fresh hell is this???

And shame on L'Équipe for comparing him to Jan. Dude can't carry Jan's dirty chamois.

Seriously....WTF? This guy is "just hoping to finish" a race at this point? FFS, he is a former TdF "winner" and podium contender and he is "just hoping" to finish some no-nothing race and it is March (for all intents and purposes)?

Oh, and if his psychological state is so fragile (not to mention his horrific bike handling skills), I'm guessing Strade Bianche in not the race for him this weekend....Who in the hell made THAT decision?!?!?!

    Just say "NO!!" to WCP!

CK, I thought the same thing. The LAST thing this guy needs is miles of dirt roads at race pace.

I think he exudes confidence - not unlike Hinault back in the day. Look at him - he's got that steely look, the physique of a concentration camp victim, legs about the size of my arms - he just states "I am kind of a big deal." (reference anyone?)

Marshmallow - that's a great nickname for him.

Physically and emotionally fragile. So much talent that he didn't need to work hard to achieve results when he was young? Gets to the big show and without his brother shielding him he falls apart? No good explanation for his failures really.

I can't wait for AM#2 which is being filmed now. The more you watch the first one, the better it gets.

Andy is just another unicorn humper. If these millennials keep it up and do not HTFU, the Western world is doomed

If Andy was not a cyclist, his mother would probably attend his job interview. Shack should just create a giant farce and give him a trophy after every training ride

Reality check: Schleck already finished five previous days of racing this year.
Schleck can handle gravel roads. He has raced Strade Bianche in the past. Finished 31st a couple years ago. He handled the cobbles of the 2010 Tour just fine.
Maybe he will finish Saturday. Maybe not. So the guy was injured last year and recently withdrew from a couple races because of breathing problems. Chill.

you guys are waaay too mean. dude broke some serious bones last year, his bro is staring at the precipice of public humiliation and his team is on shaky grounds. hardly the most suitable environment to perform at top level. do i like him? not really. but give him some space. he's young-ish and has at the very least another good 10 years ahead of him. when the time comes he'll be ready. imagine that if/when he recovers from this nasty stretch, he'll be a formidable racer. am not being polyanna here; rather, i'm looking at the sport, not the individual.

on another note, sagan effing rocks. cannondale won the lottery with that boy, hope they treat him well.

I'd "pay" to do the white roads of Tuscany and am considering putting L'Eroica on my bucket list. It's an awesome race and probably low pressure for him. It's not a race where people seem to go all Paris Roubaix. I am guessing the varied tarmac damps the speed and the constant undulation keeps the super strong flatlanders in check. If you have been to that part of the world, I could see the appeal.

    We'll see how he does.

I'd argue that it is a great environment to perform at top level....if you are mentally tough. "Soft? I'll fookin' show you 'soft'!!"

But he isn't....he proves that year after year. I'm sorry, using his brother's issues as an excuse for his own lack of performance is just incredibly weak. Whatever weird co-dependence thing they have going on is just pathetic.

Soft as pillow, I dunno, but we're certainly well beyond the point were this can be done away with just chill, and rough patch. Things have gone progressively downhill for the Schlecks ever since they left Riis.

Going from proclaiming yourself to be the hottest item on the cycling market with that fancy Leopard name for your own team and even fancier Mercedes as team cars, to being in dire straights financially leading to a merger with a team that gets a lot of bad publicity, a DS than you don't get along with and a third tier electronics store as sponsor, it's gotta be eating them up.

    http://www.theroar.com.au/2013/03/01/was-2010-the-pinnacle-for-andy-schleck/

This sums it up for me:

For a rider whose primary focus is the Tour de France, perhaps it will be the pinnacle. But it must be remembered that Andy Schleck is still just 27 years old and should be entering his prime. However, while acknowledging the serious nature of last year’s injury, many questions still need to be asked of the younger Schleck.

Can he overcome his limitations against the clock? Does he lack the killer instinct needed to bury an opponent? Does he really fear the big descents? Can he ever return to the level that saw him match Contador on some of cycling’s biggest climbs?

Schleck isn't "The Cannibal", or "The Badger", or "The Luembourg Nutria", or whatever other nickname denotes a hard riding man. His demeanor is too soft-spoken.

He's been like that all his career, but now he's not deisel enough for an early season race in March and all of a sudden the Twinkies come out? That's way too harsh.
