    Well, here are the official announcements from On-One (Planet X)

    ========================

    On-One Buy Titus Bikes!

    We've got a new bike.... company! The rumours are true. Dave Loughran, our intrepid leader went out to buy a new fax machine and came back with a new company. Why buy it from Argos when you can get one for free from Titus Bikes! That's right, we've purchased the brand, trademarks and assets of the legendary Titus Bikes, the purveyors of fine carbon and titanium bike porn.

    To say that we're excited is a bit of an understatement. Think full suspension bling with spashes of carbon and titanium where it matters.

    There is a lot of work for us to realise our ambitions so don’t expect any big headlines or re-launches this this side of* Christmas but we may have a little stock to sell in the mean time, so sign up to the newsletter to stay in the loop.

    ========================

    And the more formal press release:

    On-One Purchase of Titus Bikes Official Press Release

    On One, the Mountain Bike Division of Planet X Ltd (Rotherham, UK) has acquired the brand, trade marks and assets of Titus Bikes Inc (Tempe, USA). The Titus acquisition complements the On One range, with the addition of high quality full suspension models. By leveraging our experience in carbon and titanium bike development we intend to build on the already strong Titus range.

    In addition the Titus brand and loyal customers will provide a boost to On One’s planned expansion into the US in 2011.

    ====================

    Pretty exciting going ons. I was already on my way to Rotherham to discuss the future of On-One in the States when the Titus deal was started. There was and still is much more happening than has been publicly reported or even speculated about on the forums. I see a great respect for the Titus brand and heritage from the On-One staff and the owner, Dave. Going to be a fun ride.

    Titus was a great little company that made great Ti bikes. Chris got greedy and started making lots of crappy AL bikes so they went out of busines. The employees got some money together and started it up again but couldn't sell enough metal bikes in the carbon wave so they went out of business again. Someone bought the name and now someone else bought the name. The new company isn't the old Titus company that some might have fond memories of. My guess is that they will have some solid carbon rigs just like the other genero options out there. They will likely be CBO (or similar) distributed so you won't get to even touch 'em let alone ride 'em before you order.

    EDIT: Mybe On One can make it great again...

    I'd put a different take on original titus' demise. I had two aluminum racer x bikes, which were state of the art at the time with a really beefy Horst link that ripped single track very, very well - IMHO no other manufacturer could rival them for an XC DS race-worthy at the time. But other companies finally caught up and titus went hi zoot with goofy ti/carbon combos.

    lsd,

    Yah, the exogrid stuff might have been part of their demise as well since it was so costly to produce.

    I had an AL road, hard tail, and Racer X (shop sponsorship). The road and HT were junk and the X was very close to it. Weld qaulity was poor and they all required too much steering to get through corners. The Horst rear ends were fine but that wasn't Titus, they bought that from the big S. Don't even get me started on their poor customer service...

    Hmmm, so they must have suffered quality decline issues, too. That is a sad but classic tale.
    I had great customer service, e.g. they convert the rear end to disc mount while I waited, gave me a tour of the hole-in-the-wall factory, were clearly proud of their place. And the welds were perfect. I beat the crap out of that bike and the suspension never developed play.
    Just discussing trivia here, but I thought Specialized didn't invent the Horst link, they just bought exclusive patent rights. While Titus was making super beefy rear ends, the early Specialized FS bikes had noodly rear ends that didn't last.

    Horst invented the Horst link but the big S paid big money to own it.

    ie: #1: No matter how many spacers I put on the non drive side of the BB the crank rubbed the chain stay so after telling me how dumb I was for several weeks they had me ship it to them and they crimped the chain stay in a vice so the crank would clear.
