Does anyone have any recommendations for a basic book or other resource regarding nutrition? I have little knowledge on the subject and I would like to learn more with a bent toward cycling. Thanks.

The first book I'd buy is called The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth. I like this one because it covers a lot of basics and tells the person not just what to eat but why it is good for you. The second book I'd try is Your Body's Sign Language which is more medical/diagnostic in nature. Those are purely nutrition books. Then I'd read Fast Food Nation and The Omnivore's Dilemma for more of an idea on what not to eat and the problems with commercial food. Then rent the following "horror" movies. Food INC., The Future of Food, and Food Matters.

Thanks guys - I was just thinking about the same thing and the books my wife has are really not geared to nutrition.

i have bought and read these two by Brendan Brazier: Thrive Diet and, Thrive Fitness. It's written from the perspective of a vegan approach to diet, but you can really just take the main themes and add in meat protein for a kind of Paleo diet. (another good book BTW.) If you only wanted to buy one, and already know about how to train, go with the Thrive Diet. The second, Thrive Fitness summarizes the first but with added training techniques information. I have incorporated many of the vegan principles into my diet and really notice positive changes.

The sponsors of this forum, VeloNews (Velo Press), have a book by Monique Ryan, MS, RD, LDN, titled, Sports Nutrition for Endurance Athletes. It is quite comprehensive and includes weight gain and loss as well as the specific needs of athletes like us AND general concepts.

The palio diet is totally idiotic IMHO

Read "Food Revolution" by John Robbins. Absolutly one of the best food books ever
